Still Searching…

Still on the hunt for the perfect pearly non-shimmery highlighter. In a previous post, I discussed the new MAC Magnetic Nude collection and how I was extremely excited for the Extra Dimension Skinfinishes and the comeback of Superb. Well, I went to MAC the second I got back from vacation and tried Superb, and it was a sparkly disco ball on my face. Not cute. I ended up purchasing a different Skinfinish from the collection, Fairly Precious, but after trying to love the sparkliness of it, I just couldn’t deal with spending $40 on a product I wasn’t obsessed with. Back to MAC it went.

My next attempt at a highlighter actually came to me by accident. When I tried to explain to another beauty-savvy friend the finish I was looking for, I told her to “imagine a satin finish eyeshadow”. This sheen without shimmer was exactly what I was looking for. Her response? “So get a satin finish eyeshadow!” And I did. The next day at Sephora, I went around the store testing eyeshadows, and settled on Bare Minerals’ Eyecolor in Soul, which is a light bone colour with a beautiful shine and no shimmer. I’m definitely into it and it’s an amazing step in the right direction, but I’m still not quite there yet.

The search continues…

No More Poo!

If you haven’t heard of the “No Poo” method, I’m guessing I have your attention now. While it sounds like something that would lead to an upset stomach, the “No Poo” movement actually refers to a growing group of women (and men) who have stopped using shampoo. At all. It sounded strange to me at first, but after doing my research, this is definitely something I’m willing to try. While many people have chosen to stop using commercial shampoos due to the chemicals in these products, their impact on the environment, and the cost of purchasing them, the argument that most speaks to me as a scientist is that basically we don’t need shampoo, and that it is doing us more harm than good. According to Melissa Dahl in her article for, washing our hair with shampoo actually removes the natural oils that our scalp produces, and shampooing so often actually causes our scalps to produce more oil to compensate, which causes the quick greasiness of our hair without a day’s wash. This causes a “vicious cycle”, because in order to combat the oiliness, we need to then wash our hair again. So how can we get out of this cycle? There are many techniques and fun new products which I am really excited to try which can help you if you also want to try it out.

If you want to go DIY, Reddit’s r/nopoo section suggests replacing your commercial soap with diluted baking soda, salt water, various herbs, or bentonite/kaolin clay. According to the site, if your hair is curly, you may even be able to go conditioner-only, or even water-only!

I personally am too lazy for DIY haircare, so I am really excited to try the new “co-washing” (washing your hair with conditioner) cleansing conditioner products that have just been introduced. According to (AKA the bible), co-washing is gentler on your hair than using shampoo, minimizes colour damage because you’re not using harsh chemicals, and adds the right amount of hydration to your hair, cutting down on frizz and puffiness we all know so well. The products that I would recommend and am excited to try are L’Oréal’s Evercreme and Evercurl cleansing conditioners, which have gotten great reviews from beauty bloggers,  and for the high end market, Wen Hair Care’s Cleansing Conditioner has received over 500 5-star reviews on Amazon.

Once I get my hands on some L’Oréal Evercreme I will definitely be doing some progress posts. In the meantime, I hope you learned something new about caring for your hair, and report back with any progress.
